The random article:
Some of his nervous excitement faded. Angela probably had nothing more in mind than searching.
But if we go looking for her, we will be alone. As long as we don$prime;t find her.
Angela leaned forward, reached around her bent legs, and used her crew socks to wipe her feet dry. Instead of putting them on, she spread them out on the rock. Then she stretched out her legs, crossed one, and worked her bare foot into a sneaker.
Howard had taken off his own boots and socks. He$prime;d considered soaking his feet, but given up on the idea because he didn$prime;t want his pants to get wet and he$prime;d thought he would look like a turkey if he rolled up his cuffs.
As Angela put on her other sneaker, he plucked his wadded socks out of his boots. They were filthy and damp. He dropped them onto the rock. Without socks, he wasn$prime;t eager to shove his feet into his boots. He knew they would feel awful: not only tight on his tender feet, but dank and slimy. He had a pair of Nikes in his pack. He wondered if he should go for them barefoot. Not a good idea. He might step on something sharp. Getting a foot injury way out here in the middle of nowhere . . .
«Oh, there$prime;s Doris. Over there.» Angela pointed toward the far side of the lake.
Howard spotted her at once. She was in plain sight, making her way across the sloping jumble of rock above the lake$prime;s eastern shore.
«What the hell$prime;s she doing?» he muttered.
«Exploring?»
«Didn$prime;t she get enough exercise for one day?»
«Apparently not.»
Howard shook his head and followed Doris$prime;s progress. She walked across the face of a tilted block the size of a car. At its end, she used her hands to climb a boulder. When she reached its top, she leaped across a gap and landed on a block of granite that looked like an overturned refrigerator.
«Maybe the heat drove her buggy,» Howard said.
«She$prime;s pretty agile.»
«Wait$prime;ll she gets back, she$prime;ll probably fill us all in on expertise as a mountaineer. She probably assaulted Everest last year.»
Angela cast a glance at Howard. «Hope she didn$prime;t hurt him.»
He laughed. Then, mimicking Doris, he said, «You been taking wise-guy lessons from Tweedle-Dee and Dumb-Dumb?»
Her head bobbed. She was mugging like a dope, her eyes fixed on Howard, and he felt a sudden rush of affection for her so strong it seemed to blot out everything else. It was a very odd sensation. Even as it swept through him, he realized it was nothing like sexual arousal. It was like tenderness or sorrow. It made him feel almost like weeping. He reached out and curled a hand behind her head and leaned toward her until his mouth found her lips.
